The Benefits of Using Organic Skincare

More and more people are questioning the ingredient lists of skincare brands and investing more time in researching the impact chemical ingredients have on us. It’s no secret that some skincare products that we’ve used before contain harmful ingredients. More brands are being called out for using harmful, carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting ingredients in their products which is forcing us to think, “Well what do I use instead?”. Organic skincare of course! After all, our skin is the largest organ of the body, so what we put on it matters.

As we’ve learned that chemical or non-organic skincare products can contain ingredients that are harmful for us, it’s important that we avoid these toxic ingredients. Skincare products that are applied on a daily basis like a cleanser, moisturizer, serums, etc. are absorbed into the skin and then travel through your bloodstream and inside the body. Here are 5 reasons why you should be using organic skincare products:

1. The Cosmetics Industry is Poorly Regulated

Cosmetic companies based in North America have looser regulations for skincare ingredients to follow. Health Canada has more oversight than the United States FDA association. Despite some government surveillance, not all harmful ingredients have been banned like parabens, sulphates, alcohols and others. It’s really up to consumers to pay attention to the ingredients label and do your own research.

2. Most Generic Brands Use Harmful Chemicals

If you take a look at the ingredient list of your drugstore or generic skincare products you’re likely to find toxic ingredients in the list because they’re inexpensive filler ingredients that will help with the product texture, feel and smell. Here are a few examples and how they’ll be listed:

  • “Parabens” - often found in skincare products, makeup, shampoos, conditioners. This is used as a preservative and can also be listed as propylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben. They’re typically used in products that have water (would be listed as “Aqua”) added to it. Parabens have been proven to disrupt hormones, are carcinogenic and have been phased out in the EU.
  • “Fragrance/Parfum” - found in just about everything. This adds the desired scent of the product, but what exactly is it made up of? Companies are not required to disclose what ingredients that make up the “fragrance” in their products. Unless derived from an essential oil, “fragrance” is likely to come from harmful chemical components.

3. Generic Skincare Lacks Nutrients

Most generic skincare products contain little to no nutritional ingredients that will truly benefit your skin. Rather than boosting your skin’s health, the chemicals in the formula are synthetically made in a lab and results in underdelivering noticeable skin improvements. For example, naturally sourced Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that will fight free radicals, brighten the skin, prevent transepidermal water loss and support the production of collagen. And that’s because it came from an active and alive source like a plant or fruit. When made synthetically in a lab, you won’t see the benefits Vitamin C promises. Organic brands focus on using essential vitamins in their products, allowing you to nourish your skin with ingredients that will heal your skin’s problems. And focus on ensuring these essential vitamins from organically-farmed ingredients so their customers can actually get the promised benefits.

4. Better For Our Planet

The chemicals that make up those products don’t break down when going through the drain. Instead, they accumulate in our ecosystem harming our environment when streamed into our lakes, rivers and water systems. Even worse? The manufacturing process of creating these chemicals in our skincare products also harms the environment. When choosing organic skincare products, you’re choosing organic farming. These ingredients are sustainably grown and harvested, which minimizes the environmental impact. These ingredients come from natural and organic origins, have small batch processing and typically follow environmentally-friendly production processes.

5. Supporting Cruelty-Free Organizations

While “organic” and “cruelty-free” are not synonymous in the skincare industry, when choosing an organic brand you’re likely supporting cruelty-free practices. Many organic skincare brands invest in cruelty-free practices and stray from frowned upon practices like animal testing that are still commonplace in many conventional cosmetic companies.
