Facials FAQ With Infinite Beauty Founder Victoria Michael

Facials provide our skin with many great benefits. They can renew skin cells, improve circulation to reduce puffiness and help treat specific skin conditions. While facials are not complex treatments, oftentimes we are left questioning which course of facial treatment is best suited for our skin concerns. Seeking advice and guidance from licensed professionals is the best course of action to learn everything you need to know about facials. We sat with our founder and licensed medical esthetician, Victoria Michael, to answer the most common questions she gets with her clients for facial treatments.

How often should facial treatments be done?

Victoria: I recommend getting a facial done once a month. This will be different for every patient, depending on the skin conditions I am treating, what their skin goals are and how they are taking care of their skin in between treatments. Once a month is a general rule of thumb to follow for skin maintenance.

Why do some experience breakouts after a facial?

Victoria: Breaking out after a facial is quite common and is known as purging. The types of treatment and products I use in facials will speed up the turnover of your skin cells which pushes all the toxins and impurities trapped in your pores. They would have eventually come to the surface of your skin in the form of a breakout, a facial will speed up that process! Just be sure the esthetician you are working with is following the strictest sanitary measures, not touching their phone during treatment, changing gloves post extractions, sanitizing tools, etc., to prevent any bacterial breakouts from happening post-facial.

How long until I see the results from my facial?

Victoria: This will always depend on the type of facial I am giving and where my patient is at in healing their skin. There are some treatments where results are immediately visible right after treatment. In most cases, visible results can take several days to several weeks for long-lasting results. I always like to remind my clients that long-term results come from holistically caring for their skin. That means good quality skincare products, proper skincare habits, hygienic habits, and learning what their acne triggers are when it comes to their diet and lifestyle choices.

Can I do a facial if I have acne, rosacea, and/or an eczema flare-up?

Victoria: Absolutely! I always do a skin analysis for every new patient to know what type of treatment they should be doing. Since I use paramedical skincare which is stronger than typical mainstream skincare products, I need to be aware of these types of skin concerns so I can select the appropriate products for their treatment. For example, the treatments and products used for someone who has rosacea will focus more on calming and hydrating the skin whereas a chemical peel will be used for someone with oily, acne-prone skin.

Since the blowing up of TikTok in 2020, I have seen an increase in my clients with rosacea whereas previously, most of my facials were for clients dealing with acne. Everyone is trying any viral skincare product since it's the trend, but they’re not properly researching and understanding the product’s ingredients and formulation and how it’s causing harm to their skin. I highly recommend facials for people dealing with rosacea so we can specifically treat specific conditions, ensure you are getting the additional treatments and targeted products and receive guidance from a licensed esthetician to take care of your skin and make it healthy again.

What should I be doing pre and post-facial treatment?

Victoria:

Pre-facial treatment: There’s no big prep before a facial. I ask my clients to try and come in with makeup-free skin and keep skincare to a minimum that day. If your facial is scheduled in the morning, skip your morning skincare routine.

Post-facial treatment: no working out, no sweating, avoid being in the sun, sleep with your hair tied back and off your face, and use clean sheets and pillowcases. If you have gotten a peel treatment, avoid going in the sun for about 1 week and religiously wear sunscreen. If your facial is scheduled for the afternoon/evening, do your usual morning routine.

Since I use paramedical treatments and products, you may skip your nighttime routine to not irritate the skin or remove the effective products. I normally sit with my client post-facial and go through their entire current skincare routine and look at the ingredient lists of all the products they are using. I advise on what changes need to be made and provide a custom routine for them so they can maintain their skin and work towards treating their skin concerns.

How do I take care of my skin in between facial treatments?

Victoria: As I mentioned before, I always tell my clients to take a holistic approach to take care of their skin. Being diligent with your skincare routine and simple habits like using clean face towels, washing your hands before skincare and using the right products will go a long way. Especially using high-quality skincare and following a consistent regimen will completely transform your skin. Many of my facial clients use the Infinite Beauty collection daily and the changes they’ve seen in their skin are incredible.
